Classroom Design: Creating a Circus Theme Classroom

Classroom Design: Creating a Circus Theme Classroom

A circus theme is a huge hit in any elementary classroom!  With its fun and playful feel, students will love the bright colors that welcome them as they enter your room each day.

Grab a few essentials and you'll be set to design a circus classroom theme that will be the talk of the school!

Here are some ideas for designing a circus-themed classroom:

BULLETIN BOARD AND DISPLAY TITLES:

Create a cohesive theme throughout your bulletin boards and classroom displays with these fun play-on-words:

“Get Your Tickets for the Greatest Grade/Class on Earth!” (welcome display)
“Class Clowns” (pictures of each student)
“Step Right Up To ______”
“Juggling Jobs” (job board)
“Come One, Come All To __”
“Flying High Work” (Trapeze picture for student work)

CLASSROOM ACCESSORIES:

Consider including some of the following items in your classroom to enhance your circus theme:

Clown Noses and Wigs
Want students attention fast?  Put on a clown wig or nose!  Or - reward students by allowing them to be the "class clown" for a day when they've earned a special treat.  Let students wear the wig or nose when they are sharing their reading or writing with the class.  Grab a clown wig HERE or a even a set of clown noses to share with your students.

Stuffed Animals of Common Circus Animals
Stuffed animals make great reading buddies for students when reading independently.  Create a stuffed animal collection of common circus animals such as elephants, monkeys, and tigers.  Here are some ones to get you started.

Balloons

Brightly Colored Pennant Banners
Where there's a circus, there's pennant banners.  Again - perfect for an easy pop of color.  You can easily make them yourself, or get some ready-made ones here.

Polka-Dots and Striped Bulletin Board Backgrounds
Tie your bulletin boards into your theme with common circus patterns like polka-dots and red and white stripes.  Find these patterns on fabrics at a local craft store like Jo-Ann Fabrics or even Wal-Mart and they'll last you all year!

OTHER IDEAS:

  • Use raffle tickets as a behavior/reward system (like these)
  • Use red and white fabric to create a circus tent (like this)
  • Write sight words or vocabulary words on paper balloons
