Throughout this interactive science simulation, students will work through each step of the investigation using interactive visuals, research, simulated experiment results, and data. This allows students to focus on understanding how scientists think and use the scientific method from beginning to end.
This interactive science lesson is perfect for introducing, teaching, or reviewing the scientific method in your upper elementary classroom.
WHAT STUDENTS LEARN ABOUT THE SCIENTIFIC METHOD:
Students will explore each step of the scientific method through a real-world paper airplane investigation:
Observe & Ask a Question — Make careful observations and develop a scientific question.
Research — Explore student-friendly information about lift, air resistance, airplane shape, and balance.
Form a Hypothesis — Use observations and research to make an educated prediction.
Test the Hypothesis — Students watch as the LINKtivity simulates a fair experiment while identifying independent and controlled variables.
Organize the Data — Students learn how to record and organize experimental results using tables and graphs.
Analyze the Data & Draw Conclusions — Look for patterns in the data, determine whether the evidence supports the hypothesis, and draw a conclusion.
Students don't just read about the scientific method —they see it in action!
THE PAPER PLANE SIMULATION:
Students follow along as kid scientists investigate three different paper airplane designs:
The Basic Dart
The V-Wing
The Wilson
Students will observe the unique features of each design and then research concepts such as lift, air resistance, airplane shape, and balance. They'll learn how to form a hypothesis about which airplane will fly the farthest before putting their prediction to the test.
After the simulation, students see how scientists analyze the results and use evidence from their data to determine whether their hypothesis was supported.

WHY TEACHERS LOVE THIS RESOURCE:
Low-prep & easy to implement — Just share the link and go!
Student-paced learning keeps students actively involved in the investigation.
Hands-on learning gives students a concrete example of how the scientific method works.
Built-in differentiation with audio support for students who need additional reading support.
Real-world application makes abstract scientific concepts easier to understand.
Multiple implementation options — Use it whole group, in small groups, or independently.
Perfect for introducing the scientific method, reviewing the process, or supporting a science investigation.
WHY STUDENTS WILL LOVE IT:
They get to become scientists!
They investigate a question with a real-world experiment.
They explore different paper airplane designs.
Interactive visuals and multimedia make science concepts easier to understand.
They learn that scientists don't have to be right — they have to follow the evidence!
HOW TO USE THIS RESOURCES IN YOUR CLASSROOM:
This LINKtivity® is flexible enough to fit a variety of science settings:
Project it on a SMARTBoard or interactive whiteboard for whole-class instruction.
Use it in small groups as students work through the investigation together.
Assign it for independent work on Chromebooks, tablets, or iPads.
Incorporate it into a science center or station rotation.
Use it as an introduction to a scientific method unit.
Use it as a review activity before a science assessment.
Pair it with an actual paper airplane experiment for an extended hands-on science experience.
Use it as a meaningful science sub plan or independent learning activity.
Because the LINKtivity® is web-based, students only need internet access to get started.
Note: Videos are streamed via YouTube but are displayed inside the LINKtivity. If YouTube is blocked at your school, you may need to request that your technology department whitelist the video links.
If you're looking for an engaging, interactive, and student-friendly way to teach the scientific method, this LINKtivity® gives students something much more meaningful than a list of steps. They'll observe, question, research, predict, experiment, collect evidence, analyze data, and draw conclusions — just like real scientists!
